Irish immigrant Thomas F. Walsh paid $853,000 for the 4 floor, 60 room mansion and hired the architect Henry Andersen from New York to design it. Construction started in 1901 and was completed in 1903. Mr. Walsh made his fortune in gold mining as the sole owner of of one of the richest mines in the world, located in Ouray, Colorado.
Evalyn Walsh, Mr. Walsh's daughter, was the last owner of the 44 1/2 carat hope diamond whose sale to the Smithsonian was negotiated in the mansion. Indonesia purchased the mansion in 1951. Learn more on the Embassy's Website.
